Presence Detectors for Hallways
Presence detectors for hallways switch the light on automatically as you walk by and off when nobody is there, so you'll never have to fumble for the switch in the dark or leave the light on. At GreenIce you'll find PIR and microwave sensors, recessed and surface-mounted, easy to integrate with your LED fixtures.
Types of detectors for hallways
- 360º recessed PIR sensors: installed in the suspended ceiling, they detect movement all around them. There are standard versions and a 140º mini version for small openings.
- Surface-mounted PIR sensors: 360º models (including an ultra-flat one) and 180º models with IP44 or IP65 protection, useful when there's no suspended ceiling or for wall mounting.
- 360º microwave sensors: with adjustable range from 2 to 10 meters. They detect smaller movements and can be hidden behind non-metallic materials.
- Fixtures with integrated sensor: if you'd rather not install the detector separately, there are LED ceiling lights with motion sensor, such as a 25 W IP65 ceiling light with motion and daylight sensor, or a 120 cm T8 LED tube with detector.
Why a hallway is the ideal place for a detector
A hallway is a passageway: you walk through it many times a day, but only for a few seconds. That's why it's where the most light is wasted when it's left on, and where it's most convenient for the light to come on by itself, especially at night or with your hands full. In long hallways, one detector can control several fixtures at once, saving you from installing two-way switches at each end.
Combined with LED downlights or energy-efficient ceiling lights, the savings are twofold: they use little power while on, and they only come on when needed.
How to choose a presence detector for the hallway
Technology: PIR or microwave
PIR detects moving heat and is the most common and simplest option. Microwave is more sensitive and can be installed out of sight, but its range should be set carefully so it doesn't detect through thin walls.
Angle and detection area
On the ceiling, a 360º sensor covers the hallway from the center. On a wall, a 180º sensor aimed along the hallway better detects people approaching.
Load capacity
Many detectors list two figures, such as 1200/300 W: the lower one is the reference for LED loads. Add up the wattage of all the fixtures it will control.
Time and light settings
Check that you can adjust the on-time and the brightness threshold, so it doesn't activate during the day if the hallway gets natural light.
